Pre-production
process
For are film we made a 90 second short film for depict
competition. With a cash prize of £1200. We distribute it by putting it up on
you tube and put it on the depict website for the competition. The other type
of moving image media product are feature film that are an hour plus, TV series
or single soap and lastly music video. These distribute in different methods
for example the feature film is in cinema and the TV series are on the TV. Also
there are put on blue rays and DVD to make them sell. This also connect to you
tube as the trailers show a tiny bit of the film and later on the film get put
on You Tube after the film has been release for a few week or month.
The sources of the film, TV and other moving image
productions are sponsors they back the film in return they get some for it like
advertising or their name in the credits. Also bank loan can be used to get
some of the money needed to make the film, but this mean you own a lot of money
to the bank and if the film fails you will be in duet and have to pay a lot of
money. Also if you have a money you can self-fund it to make the film. There are also other ways like Kickstarter
where you show you film to people and some of them put their own money in to the
making of the film and the more they donate the better the reward they get. For
example, if some donates £100 they may get a signed poster or photo of one of
the actor in the film. Sometime people win the lottery and make a film using
the money there won to fund it, but rare. Also movie studio funds the movie but
is only for big films and also they sometime want input in the film and want
some control over the final product or there want some of the profits that the
film makes.

A lot of money spend, even to make a small film. Money has
to be spend on thing for example props. Prop are a big thing in the film. They
make some characters look the part prop may be guns or glass and cars. Also we
will need refreshments for the cast and crew. Traveling and paying for vans and
coaches to take the equipment and crew
to each film location is very important. We will also have to pay for Equipment
for the film, this will be items like the camera and the boom mic. Software is also important because we need it
for editing to do the finishing touches to the film and take out any mistake in
the film. We also had to get sets for are film. The location was w16, w15 and
filming in the hallway. We had to get permission to film in college. We didn’t
need to copyright anything because we got are music and sound effects from bensound.org and freesound.org. Also a lot of money is required to do
marketing. Marketing is well important because you need to get your film out
there for people to see. If not know one know that you have made and release a
film. Also it gets your name out there as well.
We had to obtain a camera for are filming also a zoom mic to
record are audio and make the short advert for the phone and make a news radio
advert for the end of are film. Also we need costumes for the film to make the
character also we need the editing software to edit are film for are project.
We also had to get actors in the film.
Personal i.e. talent and crew in a short film tends to be
very small because they don’t have the money for the good cameras and big sets
or to pay the crew. The crew and casts tends to be about 5 to 10 people. In a
television programme the crew tends to be a med size. As they have a lot of
money to pay for actor and crew also they will have very good gear e.g. cameras
and lights. The
crew and casts tends
to be about 50 to 150 people depending on the budget and how long it running
for. In a Hollywood feature film for “Ant Man” the crew and actor list is
massive for the main actor to all the different role in the crew. Also they
have the very best equipment and software to get a high quality film. The crew
and casts tends to be about 200+ due to the high budget

In are group we allocated work by choosing a role. I was the
camera man and the other were both actors. We all did editing and the preproduction
of the film. We all came up with an idea and chose the best at the start. We
also had other people in the film background artist like my friend Dane who was
in the film for a few shots.
We had a time frame of 9 lesson to do the preproduction, six
lesson to do the film and 6 lesson to do editing and finish the film. Are
filming when into the editing time frame because of people being ill and not
being here. In the professional media industry if the deadline is not meet it
mean people will lose jobs and also it will cost lots of money to get back to
the deadline. Are group did not meet are deadline.
In the professional industry they obtain equipment by
renting it or going on a website to hire their equipment because it is more
cost effected to do that than it is to buy it. For example, www.hirecamera.com
For are film the equipment was available to us we used camera
DLSR, tripod, SD card and microphone. We could get all of this from the AV room
in college to make are short film
Location we used to was the college to do all of our
filming. We got permission by do a release form. We pick this location because
it had the background and set we needed for are film for example w15 because of
the lighting and it had the prefect background and set. The issue we had were
at least one person being ill on each of the filming days. We overcame them by
using are editing time to finish the filming that we had left.
The materials listed we app for the phone which we made in
photo shop. Also music and sound, we got this from bensound.org and
freesound.org. We use editing software that the college has. Financial
considerations are copyright, music license, insurance and wage and equipment
The legal consideration is permission to film at the location. Copyright protects your work and stops others from using it without your permission. You get copyright protection automatically and you don’t have to apply or pay a fee. You automatically get copyright protection when you create:
- original
literary, dramatic, musical and artistic work, including illustration and
photography
- original
non-literary written work, e.g. software, web content and databases
- sound
and music recordings
- film
and television recordings
- broadcasts
- the
layout of published editions of written, dramatic and musical works
You can mark your work with the copyright symbol (©), your name and the
year of creation. Whether you mark the work or not doesn’t affect the level of
protection you have.
Copyright prevents people from:
copying your work
distributing copies of it, whether free of
charge or for sale
renting or lending copies of your work
performing, showing or playing your work in
public
making an adaptation of your work
putting it on the internet
Copyright didn’t affect us because we used a
free music from bensound.org and sound effect from freesound.org
Clearance is having permission to use a location
or area or to use a band or logo.
The public liability insurance covers you for damage
and people hurting themselves
Completion guarantee is completing the film.
Ofcom's Broadcasting Code governs what can be aired on TV and radio. It is the rule book for TV and radio stations and
sets standards for programmes which broadcasters have to follow. The Code
exists to protect viewers and listeners from harmful and offensive content but
also ensures that broadcasters have the freedom to make challenging programmes.
The BBC
Trust regulates these areas rather than Ofcom.
The Ofcom
Broadcasting Code contains rules relating to such matters on commercial
services, but under the terms of the Communications Act the BBC is not licensed
by Ofcom in the same way as the commercial broadcasters, and to reflect this
situation a Memorandum of Understanding exists between Ofcom and the BBC Trust.
So the BBC is ultimately accountable to the BBC Trust with regard to these
areas.
The BBC has
a formal complaints process and complaints should be escalated with them in the
first instance, as outlined in the BBC’s complaints handling procedures on its
website.
